Training Like NHL Pros at Extra Hour Hockey

In this special spotlight episode, Aaron and Paul step out of the studio and into the most comprehensive off-ice hockey training center in Northern California: Extra Hour Hockey Training Facility. Joined by owners Kathy and Randy Andrade, the hosts get a firsthand look at how players of all levels use cutting-edge technology to accelerate their results.

The Venue: History Meets High Performance

The facility is housed in a unique 1915 cannery building, retaining its historic vibe with original concrete and large windows. This space has been transformed into a high-tech hub dedicated to “leveling up” a player’s game through small-group sessions, typically maintaining a 4-to-1 or 6-to-1 player-to-coach ratio for deep, individualized development.

The Equipment: Refining the “Triple Extension”

The tour showcases specialized tools designed to isolate and improve the mechanics of a hockey stride, specifically the triple extension of the hip, knee, and ankle.

  • Synthetic Ice: Extra Hour features the most “skateable” synthetic ice available, designed to mimic on-ice conditions and allow for seamless transition to the rink.
  • The Skating Treadmill: A high-intensity tool for working on posture and stride efficiency under the watchful eye of a coach.
  • Power Skating Machines: Used by NHL pros like Brent Burns, these machines use adjustable resistance cords to connect arm and leg movements and reinforce proper return mechanics.
  • Slide Boards & Russian Boxes: These aids help players train for optimal posture and power without wasting valuable (and expensive) on-ice time.
  • Mini Rink & Shooting Lanes: Dedicated spaces for situational drills and improving shot power.

Meet the Expert: Cathy Andrade

The facility’s success is rooted in the philosophy of Cathy Andrade, known as the “Bay Area’s Power Skating Pioneer.”

  • Experience: With 35 years of coaching experience, Cathy holds triple-gold CFSA certification and has trained with two Olympians.
  • Legacy: She established the first formal power skating program in the Bay Area, Power Hour, in 1992, and her progressive teaching style has since been recognized nationally.
  • Philosophy: Her programs at both Extra Hour and Power Hour (based at Sharks Ice) focus on mastering fundamentals through repetitive, visual, and verbal feedback.

Paul and Aaron’s Pro Challenge

The episode is a tour and extreme workout. The hosts are joined by professional guest players Scott Hannan and Mark Smith to compare their skills across several challenges:

  • The Treadmill Test: Paul and Aaron take turns on the skating treadmill to see if they can maintain their form at professional speeds.
  • Drills with the Pros: The hosts join the pros on the mini rink for high-intensity drills.
  • The Hardest Shot & Lightbox Challenge: A competitive look at shot power and reaction time using the facility’s specialized training aids.
